The Wild West Comes to Town!

THE BEST OF ALBERTA’S WILD WEST Has been rescheduled to June 2019:  I am very excited to be able to offer this workshop! For anyone who loves the Canadian West and Cowboy Culture this is the ultimate in private photo shoots with some of Alberta’s best horsemen and horsewomen. All our models are authentic cowboys and cowgirls who don’t just talk the talk – they live the life. We will have the opportunity to photograph these buckaroos in action against iconic Rocky Mountain, Prairie and Badlands landscapes, movie sets as well as typical ranch settings and quiet moments. Each day will be chalked full of photo ops from sunrise to sundown. Are you ready to COWBOY UP?!

$2499 pp includes instruction and all model fees for our horses, cattle, cowboys, cowgirls, Indian model, location fees etc.  Hotel and evening meal not included. This workshop will be limited to 8 people. Sample itinerary subject to change depending on weather.

Day 1: Wild Horses of Alberta: What could be more synonymous with the wild west than wild horses? Our journey begins with a drive into the back country of the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains where wild horses have roamed for 100 years. We will visit the Wild Horses of Alberta Society rescue facility and find wild horses in their natural environment. Watch along the way for grizzly and black bear, deer and moose. Lunch will be held at Sunset Outfitting on the Red Deer River. Afternoon shoot will be more wild horses and whatever comes our way. Overnight at the Sundre Best Western Hotel.

Day 2. Cowboy Up in the Rockies!  Heading south, we will spend the day at the Rafter Six ranch. Here we will be treated to a photoshoot with the incredible horseman and horsewoman of the Cowley family. We will start with a sunrise shoot of the iconic Mount Yamnuska, followed by our cowboys and cowgirls herding a group of colourful ranch horses through the scenic backdrop. Lunch will be a wagon ride to a cowboy picnic around the campfire, followed by an afternoon shoot with members of the Buffalo Nation tribal dancers and models in full First Nations costume.

Driving south we proceed to the village of Longview where dine at the Longview Steakhouse. This little gem is considered one of the top steakhouses in Canada serving nothing but the best in Alberta beef! If time permits we will catch a sunset at one of the local ranches.

Day 3. Where Buffalo Roam... The morning shoot will take us to the Scott Ranch where we will photograph a herd of buffalo including the sacred white buffalo known as “Tatanka- ska”.   Free time will be spent exploring several movie sets including a frontier town and old ranch house sets used in such movies as Legends of the Fall, The Virginian, Hell on Wheels and the Revenant.

Longview may have a population of only 300 people, but it is home to some of the best restaurants, art galleries and country music in southern Alberta. For a taste of authentic cowboy culture we will have lunch with the locals at their favourite watering hole, the Twin Cities Saloon, followed by a tour of the local art and photo galleries.

Afternoon will take us back to Scott Ranch where the hired hands will take us on a trip back through time. We will have opportunities to photograph a 4-horse stage coach in action, and have a photoshoot with cowboys and horses down at the Highwood River.

Dinner will take place at the Westwood Café in Black Diamond one of my favourite spots close to home. The evening shoot will be a “Meet the Mustangs” opportunity where you can get up close and personal with my three adopted wild horses with a beautiful mountain backdrop. Overnight Blue Sky Hotel

Day 4. Open Range & Cowboy Trail. We will drive south again to Anchor Bar Ranches and Outfitting near beautiful Chain Lakes in the dramatic foothills. Fall colours along Willow Creek, Longhorn cattle, and World Champion Quarter Horses are just a few of our photography subjects. A working cow-horse demonstration, a cattle drive and cowboy model shoots will fill up our busy day, which will be capped off with a cowboy barbeque and private Country Music concert. Overnight at Blue Sky Hotel.

For anyone looking to add cowboys and horses to their portfolio this is an opportunity not to be missed. A possible add-on to this trip is a 1-day shoot in the badlands near Drumheller with horse and model. This will depend on interest and numbers. Please email for more info or questions.
